What DPI does and does not do
A JPG stores pixels. Its header can also carry a density — dots per inch — which printing and layout software use to decide how big those pixels should be on paper. Changing it changes nothing about the picture, only the size it is assumed to print at. That is why this page shows the print size beside the DPI, in centimetres and inches.
The Output tab opens first, with 300 DPI chosen. The density is written into the JFIF segment at the front of the file, and then read back out of the saved bytes; the figure printed is the one in the file, not the one that was asked for.
Good to know
- To print larger at the same quality you need more pixels, not a different DPI. Enlarging adds no detail.
- Print shops usually ask for 300 DPI at the final size. Use Print size under Size to get the pixels for that.
- Nothing else from the PNG is carried into the JPG — only the density, and only if you choose it.
Questions about DPI
- Does 300 DPI make it sharper?
- No. DPI is a number in the file's header that tells printing software how large to print the pixels. The pixels themselves are unchanged, so the picture is exactly as sharp as before. A 600-pixel-wide picture at 300 DPI prints 5.1 cm wide; at 72 DPI the same pixels print 21.2 cm wide and look coarser on paper.
- How many pixels for A4 at 300 DPI?
- 2,480 × 3,508 pixels prints at 21.0 × 29.7 cm, which is A4. For other sizes, use Print size under the Size tab: type the width in cm or inches and the page sets the pixels that size needs at the DPI you choose.
- Why does my viewer still say 72 DPI?
- Some viewers ignore the JFIF header and report 72 for every JPG, or read a different field. This page reads the density back out of the saved bytes and prints it under Output, so you can see what the file actually says. Photoshop, GIMP and most print services read it.
- Can I keep the DPI my PNG already had?
- Yes, if the PNG states one: its pHYs chunk is read on opening, and a “Keep the PNG's DPI” button appears under Output with the figure.
- Which DPI does my form want?
- Indian forms that set a physical size often use 200 DPI (PAN photo and signature, for example). The online-forms page sets the DPI, pixels and KB range together from the form's published rule.
