Convert PNG to JPG on a phone or computer
Every major system can turn a PNG into a JPG without a website. Here are the built-in ways, one per system, and the check to make afterwards.
Convert a PNGiPhone and iPad
- Save the PNG to the Files app (from Photos or any app, use Share, then Save to Files).
- In Files, press and hold the picture, choose Quick Actions, then Convert Image.
- Pick JPEG and a size (Small, Medium, Large or Original). A new file appears beside the original.
- Available since iOS and iPadOS 16.
Mac
- In Finder, right-click (or Control-click) the PNG, choose Quick Actions, then Convert Image, and pick JPEG and a size.
- Or open it in Preview, choose File, then Export, set Format to JPEG and move the Quality slider before saving.
Windows
- Open the PNG in Paint, choose File, then Save as, then JPEG picture.
- Paint has no quality setting, so the size is whatever it chooses.
Android
Gallery apps differ from one phone maker to the next, and there is no converter built into Android itself that works the same on every phone. Some galleries offer a save-as or export option in their edit screen; otherwise a page that runs in the browser does the job. This one works offline once installed, and the picture stays on the phone.
The check to make afterwards
A JPG cannot be transparent, so every built-in tool has to put some colour under the see-through parts of a PNG — and none of the ones above asks which. Open the JPG and look at the corners and the edges of the artwork. If you see a black box, or a grey or white rim around a logo, convert it again here: you choose the colour, and the edge pixels are repaired before it goes in.
